This workshop is generously supported by a Green Neighbourhood Small Grant from the Vancouver Foundation.

Kits Car Free Days Block Parties

Kits does things a little differently, with neighbours organizing and holding block parties on different blocks over the course of the weekend, instead of one big festival.
This year it looks like there will be close to 20 (or more) block parties!

VV Demo Sustainable Transition Village at Main St. Car Free Day Fest

There is no better place to be than Car Free Vancouver Day on Fathers' Day, June 16th. On Commercial Drive (Venables to North Grandview), Denman Street (Robson to Davie) downtown, all over Kitsilano (block parties Saturday and Sunday), and Main Street (from Broadway to 30th Ave--20+ blocks!), the streets will come alive with literally hundreds of thousands of engaged and happy people.
Village won't just be on Main Street at the intersection of 13th Avenue, BUT WE WILL BE THE INTERSECTION! Our close to 20 tent Demo Sustainable Village will include our extensive library, movies, chicken coops, bees, solar panels, homesteading resources, seed libraries, neighbourhood food networks, gardening, permaculture, emergency preparedness, a plastic-free zero waste kitchen display, visioning, kid-oriented carpentry and painting activities, refreshments, community groups like Be The Change, SPEC, and Cottonwood Community Garden and SO MUCH MORE. In other words, imagine your ideal neighbourhood!
Read an article here about the festival, featuring Village Founder Ross Moster, and watch a short movie here to see how it is organized and view what it looked like on its first year on Main Street.
Be there, be part of one of the largest Car Free Day exhibitors, and enjoy the spirit of safe, open streets, Transition-style!
If you'd like to volunteer to help us with setup (10 am-noon), at a Village info table during the day (between noon and 7 pm), or with breakdown, or have tables, chairs or tents we can borrow (we're currently looking for 3-6 more tents) OR if you would like to promote/display a community project, group, or activity you're involved in, please contact volunteer@villagevancouver.ca.

VV Tabling at West End Car Free Day Festival

We'll be sharing a table with the West End Neighbourhood Food Network in front of the WE Community Centre.
Currently, we could use a couple more volunteers.
If you can help, please contact volunteer@villagevancouver.ca. (Specify that it's for the West End.)

The Village Surrey Transition Initiative presents a free public screening of “Mad City Chickens” on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. Free organic eggs will be given away while supplies last!
The screening takes place at the City Centre Library, Dr. Ambedkar Room, 4th Floor. Doors open at 6:00pm, screening starts at 6:30pm. The screening will be followed by a community dialogue on backyard chickens, food security and sustainability.
Participants will also have a chance to meet members of the Surrey Backyard Chickens group and ask questions about backyard chickens in Surrey.
Mad City Chickens is a sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical look at the people who keep urban chickens in their backyards. From chicken experts and authors to a rescued landfill hen or an inexperienced family that decides to take the poultry plunge—and even a mad professor and giant hen taking to the streets—it’s a humorous and heartfelt trip through the world of backyard chickendom.
This event is organized by the Village Surrey Transition Initiative and co-sponsored by Surrey Libraries and the Surrey Urban Farmers Market. Organic eggs are provided by Surrey Backyard Chickens & True North Hatchery.

We will begin the process of developing a Village Surrey Team Charter on Thursday, June 20, 6:30-8:30pm in Room 306 at the Surrey City Centre Library, 10350 University Drive, Surrey.
The process of developing a Team Charter involves identifying team members, doing a team member skill inventory, identifying team goals, identifying potential barriers to the achievement of these goals, and agreeing on ground rules and conflict management processes. This is a very important meeting for anyone interested in being involved in Transition work in Surrey.
The process will be facilitated by Deirdre Goudriaan, an experienced group facilitator. All are welcome. For more information, please contact David at davidanderin@dalley.ca or (604) 502-8661.

June 30, 2013 from 10:30am to 12:30pm – Queen Elizabeth Park
Meet at the water fountains at the top of Little Mountain right next to the Parking Lot at 10:30 AM. Enter at Ontario and 33rd and go up the Mountain to the parking lot at the top. The Parking lot entrance is accross from Seasons in the Park Restaurant.
Queen Elizabeth Park is a jewel of green in the middle of our city. In the 1950s some visionary people at the Vancouver Parks Board planted a beautiful arboretum and we can appreciate their foresight today. There are many water features in the park, some rock outcrops, lots of unique plant and tree specimens and some very tall older conifers. We will discuss the human history of the area before and after settlement.
By donation.
Rain or shine. Please wear footwear for possible slippery surfaces.
